Theresa May’s Brexit deal fell to a third defeat today by a crushing margin of 58 votes, triggering Tory calls for her to stand down and boosting the prospect of an early general election.
MPs threw out by 344 to 286 a stripped-down version of her withdrawal plan after a debate that saw leadership rivals Dominic Raab and Boris Johnson fall into line behind the PM. But over 30 Tories rebelled.
“I fear we are reaching the limits of this process in this House,” the wounded Prime Minister told the Commons immediately after her bigger-than-expected defeat was confirmed.
Steve Baker, of the Tory right wing European Research Group ERG, said: “I regret to say it is time for Theresa May to follow through on her words and make way so a new leader can deliver a withdrawal agreement which will be passed by Parliament.”

Of her deal, he said: “It’s finished. And we must move on. It has not passed. It will not pass.”
Jeremy Corbyn called on Mrs May to accept defeat, fall on her sword and allow a general election. “If the Prime Minister cannot accept that, she must go.”
In Brussels, European Council president Donald Tusk immediately called an emergency summit for April 10.
DUP leader Nigel Dodds pleaded with the PM to have one more attempt at getting the backstop watered down. “Please, Prime Minister, even now use the time consecutively to get that matter spotted out,” he said.
In a closing speech, Mrs May pleaded with Labour and Tory MPs to “take a step forward together”.
She made a major concession to Labour MPs by promising them a say in the negotiating mandate for the next phase of EU talks which will cover trade, security and other issues.
But the PM failed to persuade a hard core of Tory eurosceptics and her DUP allies to back her. A handful of Labour MPs in Leave areas summoned the courage to back the agreement but too few to save it.
Downing Street was taking advice on whether the Government could have a fourth attempt at getting her deal over the line. Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt told the Standard yesterday that the EU might be flexible for a vote next week.
Appealing to Labour backbenchers Mrs May said: “I’m asking them to take a hard decision and I know that.
“I’m asking members on the opposite benches to help me deliver on an instruction from the British people.”
She urged: “Everyone will have to look into our hearts and decide what is best for our constituents and our country.”
Mrs May said she would have accepted an amendment from influential Labour MP Lisa Nandy that sought a vote for parliament to set the mandate this summer, an amendment that Speaker John Bercow did not choose to call for debate.
“If you want to honour the referendum but want Parliament to shape our future relationship, back this motion,” she said.
Jeremy Corbyn said: “We need to get a better deal. The country deserves a better deal and I’m convinced that a better deal can be negotiated.
“This deal, even the half-baked one that we have today, is bad for our democracy, bad for our economy and bad for our country.”
If MPs are unable to map forward an alternative on Monday with another round of indicates votes, Mr Corbyn demanded that Mrs May call a General Election to let the people have their say over the political chaos at Westminster and the country’s future.
