The Lovely Bones - Review

I saw the new Mark Wahlberg flick "The Lovely Bones" yesterday. The movie is set in the 70's, a simpler time, and focuses on a family with three children.

As the trailers indicate, one of the young girls is murdered and her spirit hangs around to help her father (Mark Wahlberg) find clues to who the killer is.

Being a father myself, I can say that this film hits close to home. Without going in too much detail I will just say that it left me unsatisfied. The film was just "ok" and I definitely wouldn't see it in threatres.

This one is definitely a rental.

I thought it was a good movie but tried to do too much. The director couldn't decide if he wanted a crime thriller or fantasy flick with a message. The scene when Susan Sarandon came in as the grandmother to the rescue was really weird- this was not a movie to go for cheap laughs in. Saoirse Ronan as Susie was great and the CGI was beautiful and appropriate for how a young teen might view a possible afterlife. It succeeded in showing the horror of the crime and how it affects so many people; some scenes brought a tear to my eye.
Lovely Bones - You need to read the book. The movie left out the vicious rape and murder that is extremely graphic and horrific in the book and the director was at heavy odds whether or not to put it in the movie. He decided not to because he wanted his daughters to be able to watch the movie.

Book Of Eli - Was good, but very slow. Most people were having conversations in the theatre except during the action scenes.
