Trump Blames Puerto Rico for Inconveniencing Him With Another Potential Hurricane

By Bess Levin
August 27, 2019

Donald Trump is mad at Puerto Rico.

You see, in September 2017, the U.S. territory had the audacity to be hit by a devastating hurricane. Nearly two weeks later he was forced to take time away from his busy schedule of harassing NFL players, which was grueling and required total focus, to publicly trash the mayor of San Juan for daring to request more relief funds.

When Trump finally saw fit to visit the disaster zone, he noticed that, despite Puerto Rico’s bitching, its catastrophe wasn’t “real...like Katrina” and that the survivors were a little too quick to lunge for the paper towels he threw into the crowd. Almost two years after the humanitarian crisis,

Puerto Rico still manages to chap the president’s hide daily, taking federal money that could otherwise be used for drinks at Mar-a-Lago or on Don Jr.’s hunting trips and never once saying, “Thank you, Mr. President, you are so rich,” or, “Thank you, Mr. President, you’re so much better than that Obama guy and more fit too.”

Despite Trump’s attempts to block aid to the commonwealth, Puerto Rico just keeps sucking at the government teat, telling sob stories about not having electricity or clean water and, Trump strongly suspects, vastly inflating the number of people who actually died in Maria to make him look bad.

And now these con artists are trying to scam him again with another natural disaster?

Trump on major storm approaching Puerto Rico: 'Will it ever end?'

President Trump on Tuesday responded to another tropical storm headed for Puerto Rico by citing an inflated figure he claimed his administration allocated to aid the island's recovery after Hurricane Maria.

"Wow! Yet another big storm heading to Puerto Rico. Will it ever end? Congress approved 92 Billion Dollars for Puerto Rico last year, an all time record of its kind for 'anywhere,' " Trump tweeted.

Trump has repeatedly claimed that the U.S. government provided $92 billion in aid for Puerto Rico after it was devastated by Hurricane Maria in 2017. But several fact-checkers have noted that is not the case.

NBC News reported in July that Congress had allocated roughly $43 billion for Puerto Rico, but that the island had received less than $14 billion as of May. Trump signed a bill in June providing another $1 billion in assistance.

With the island still recovering from Maria nearly two years later, Tropical Storm Dorian is making its way toward the coast of the U.S. territory. Puerto Rican officials have declared an emergency in preparation for the storm, which is expected to grow stronger as it approaches the island.

Trump has frequently boasted about his administration's response to Hurricane Maria in the face of widespread criticism from Democrats and island officials about its organization and urgency. He has at various points called the government's response "fantastic," an "unsung success" and graded it a "10."

A study commissioned by the Puerto Rican government found that nearly 3,000 people died as a result of the storm. The island adopted that as the official death toll, increasing it from 64.

Trump later claimed without evidence that the numbers were inflated to make him look bad.

San Juan mayor fires back after Trump tweet about aid to Puerto Rico

As Dorian neared Puerto Rico, President Donald Trump on Tuesday made the false claim that Congress had approved $92 billion for the island after the devastation caused by Hurricane Maria in 2017.

"Wow! Yet another big storm heading to Puerto Rico. Will it ever end? Congress approved 92 Billion Dollars for Puerto Rico last year, an all time record of its kind for 'anywhere,'" Trump complained.

In fact, Congress has allocated only about $42 billion -- and only a smaller portion of that has been spent. But Trump and the White House have repeatedly used the $92 billion figure -- based, they say, on a government estimate of how much recovery money the island could need over 20 years.

One difference in Trump's claim this time is that he said Congress has approved the money for recovery as opposed to Puerto Rico having received the money.

"Just so you understand, we gave Puerto Rico $91 billion for the hurricane," Trump told reporters in May at the White House.

According to The Washington Post, about $14 billion of the money allocated by Congress has reached the island so far.

In a phone interview Tuesday night, San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz -- who has a history of sparring with Trump -- fired back at the president on CNN.

"The president continues to express lies because the truth really does not suit him," she said. "As you said, it's not $92 billion, it is close to 42 billion. It's close to between $12.6 and $14 billion dollars that have come to Puerto Rico and still, things have not worked appropriately."

Trump has called his administration's response to Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico an "incredible unsung success."

"I think Puerto Rico was incredibly successful. Puerto Rico was actually our toughest one of all because it is an island," Trump said in September in the Oval Office, noting that boats were deployed to deliver supplies to island residents.

"I actually think it is one of the best jobs that's ever been done with respect to what this is all about," he added.

Trump also was inaccurate in his tweeted claim that the money Congress has approved for Puerto Rico in the wake of Hurricane Maria was "an all time record of its kind for "anywhere."

Government records show that some $160 billion was spent on recovery-related efforts after Hurricane Katrina and some $125 billion in the wake if Hurricane Harvey.

With the island still recovering two years after Hurricane Maria and a new tropical storm making its way toward the coast of Puerto Rico, officials have declared a state of emergency as the storm is expected to grow stronger and become a hurricane the closer it gets to the U.S. territory.

On CNN, the mayor of San Juan also said, "It seems like some people have learned the lessons of the past or are willing to say that they didn't do right by us the first time and they are trying to do their best. That is not the case with the president of the United States."

"So get out of the way, President Trump, and let the people that can do the job get the job done," she added.

I mean, why couldn't the feds just fly in helicopters and drop banknotes all over the Island? Isn't that what they did in Houston after Harvey? No? Or is there an established process and FEMA paperwork involved that the corrupt officials in Puerto Rico don't want to follow because they would rather not be held responsible for how US taxpayer dollars are spent or misspent.

Yeah, the money hasn't "reached the island". Must be Trumpy's fault. And then there's this...
