I know it's probably a dumb question, but I literally can't find how to do it. Is it because I'm still a newbie? Is there a magical button I need to press?

Look to your left.
Click first item under Main Menu, User CP
In User CP, click Edit Avatar.
You will have the choice to use one of the standard avatars or upload a pic from your computer. Be sure to stay within the size limits.
For general info, most of the "How to" questions staff gets, the answer starts with, Go to your User Control Panel.
