Best places to stay while visiting LA?

Hello ladies and gentleman,
I'm visiting LA for the first time in a couple of weeks and would like to know the best places to stay while I'm there. Either areas or name of specific hotels is great. Ladies, where do you feel safe? Gentleman, whats convenient and discrete for you? Any info is much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Shy away from staying near LAX. I say Downtown, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, and Hollywood. Orange County is really good as well.
