Texas House Republicans vote to eliminate the lottery....NOT

Our zany Texas legislature got so excited about right wing whacko attacks on the morality of the lottery here in Texas, that they voted to abolish the lottery commission a couple of days ago....meaning the end of the lottery. And, the $2 billion in educational funding that the lottery generates for the state every year. They changed their minds a couple of hours later. Not surprisingly, mostly republicans.

AUSTIN — The Texas House on Tuesday stuck a fork in the state lottery commission then resuscitated the agency hours later, realizing that dissolving it would create an unwieldy budget gap for schools and charities that depend on their piece of the pie.
It created high drama in the House, as lawmakers stunned many in the chamber by voting against a bill to ensure the Texas Lottery Commission continues operating for the next 12 years.

"The Lottery Commission is gone," Rep. Linda Harper Brown, R-Irving, declared from the dais after the House voted 81-65 against a sunset bill to continue the commission.
A second vote reversed the action with a 92-53 tally.

Led by House Republicans, the vote to abolish the commission jeopardized the future of the Texas Lotto and other games like scratch-off tickets and charity bingo. It also put in limbo lottery revenues used to fund state services, including $2.2 billion for schools.

Within hours - and after some serious behind-the-scenes lobbying by House leaders - lawmakers returned from a lunch break and decided to bring the bill back to the floor for more debate.

lets abolish the lotto, great idea ..

on second thought, lets keep the lotto

snort~
Truly unbelievable. Gives you a real sense of the level of idiocy that runs rampant in the republican-dominated Texas legislature. None of them apparently knew that they were kissing off $2 billion a year in educational funding. Fucking morons.

Yeah, but they were making their fellow "faithful" happy... and outside of a good lynching, nothing gets you votes faster in some parts of our great state.

a plate of Tex-Mex and a few Coronas cleared up their thinking, all is well

Actually, they can now have it both ways. A vote to abolish the Lottery Commission in favor of stricter morals duly recorded and part of the record AND a vote to save Texas from "financial ruin," also duly recorded.

Unfortunately, most of the native sons and daughters of tejas can't tell the difference and won't be able to remember it by the time the next election rolls around.

You liberals can't make up your minds can you? First liberals chastised the implementation of the lottery saying that it unfairly hurt the poor because the poor spent their money on a system that has very poor odds of ever winning. Liberals cried that the poor were spending money on false hopes and could better use the money on feeding their children.

Now when a republican suggests doing away with what the liberals have been bitching about, the liberals have a problem with it.

Fucking hypocrits.

I guess they were against it before they were for it.

No doubt they were, CBJ7. Republicans desire to control others at least as much as Democrats do.
