Right now, the contacts section is pretty spartan. It simply has the following:

Add a Member to Your List...
To remove a user from your contacts, un-check the box associated with their avatar and click the 'Save Changes' button.
To add a user to the list, enter their name into the empty text box and click 'Add Contact' to add them to your list.

It would be great to be able to be able to input an alternate name there as well. The point I'm making is pretty obvious when you look at any contact section of an email address book.
I suspect what is happening is that this area was a secondary priority in the earlier software versions.
