Surprise! Tucker Carlson Draws the Most Democratic Viewers in Key Demo, Even Topping Rachel Maddow
There is an entire cottage industry within media dedicated to disseminating Tucker Carlson’s nightly Fox News musings to presumably liberal audiences who may not be tuning in to hear what the leading conservative voice is telling his large following. But recent data from Nielsen MRI Fusion suggests those nightly dispatches may not be necessary: In October, the most recent month for which data is available, Carlson’s 9 p.m. ET program was the top cable news show among Democrats in the advertiser-coveted age range of 25-54.
The Nielsen MRI Fusion numbers reveal that in October, Fox News unsurprisingly got the majority of the audience of self-proclaimed Republicans, with 69% of them overall tuning into total-day programming and 73% of them in the demo tuning into primetime programming. CNN and MSNBC split the remaining conservatives with totals in the low double-digit percentages.
Fox News also commanded the largest number of independents in the key news demo during primetime and total-day hours: 55% of those 25-54 watched the network in primetime, compared to CNN’s 23% and MSNBC’s 22%. During total-day hours, 58% of independents in the demo watch Fox News, 18% chose MSNBC and 25% selected CNN.
More surprising are the stats about Carlson and Fox News’ pull with self-proclaimed Democrats. Of those demo-aged viewers surveyed who identified as Democrats, 39% chose Fox News, 31% chose MSNBC and 30% chose CNN for programming from 8 p.m. ET to 11 p.m. ET. In total-day viewership, Fox News grabbed 42% of Democrats aged 25-54, CNN nabbed 33% and MSNBC got 25%.
Carlson was top among Democrats in the demo across all of cable news that month and ranked third place among Dems in total viewership, too. Of the top four programs among Democrats in total viewers, Fox News had three: “The Five,” “Tucker Carlson Tonight” and “Hannity.” The top spot in total viewers went to MSNBC’s “The Rachel Maddow Show.”
These numbers only account for October but reveal that Fox News’ and Carlson’s sizable audiences are not that easy to define. Consider Carlson’s ratings that month. In October, Carlson’s show was the top-rated program in the demo across all of cable news and was the second highest-rated show overall, coming in only behind Fox News’ late-afternoon panel show “The Five.” In total average viewers, he netted 3.081 million viewers and in the demo, he secured 483,000. For the entire year of 2021, “Tucker Carlson Tonight” was the highest-rated program in cable news overall, bringing in an average of 3.214 million total viewers with 535,000 in the demo.
Earlier Tuesday, Nielsen released January’s ratings, which also provideda big win to Fox News. The network hit the milestone of becoming the top-rated cable news channel for 20 straight years.

More liberals watch Fox News than CNN, new data has found as the station ends 2021 as the number one news channel for the sixth year running.
Fox hauled 29 percent of the liberal audience compared to 24 percent for CNN, according to averages from April to August. MSNBC captured the majority of liberals with a 46 percent share.
A whopping 62 percent of the conservative audience was held by Fox, compared to 24 percent for MSNBC and just 14 percent for CNN, according to data from Nielson/MRI Fusion.
Despite recent resignations by commentators in protest at 'conspiracy theories', Fox continues to cut through to a broad section of American society.
In contrast, CNN - which recently axed its top host Chris Cuomo - has seen the biggest audience decline in a year that saw news networks haemorrhage viewers following the 'Trump bump' and 2020 election.
CNN shed 38 percent of its prime time viewers, while Fox was down 34 percent and MSNBC dropped 27 percent on last year.
In raw numbers, Fox averaged 1.3 million daily viewers, with MSNBC lagging behind on 919,000 and CNN flagging with 787,000.
Rupert Murdoch's channel greeted the numbers with fanfare, putting out a statement last week lauding its top shows, the jewel in the crown being Tucker Carlson Tonight, and its 'politically-diverse audience.'
Perspective: What’s with all the Democrats watching Fox News?Despite its reputation as a conservative-leaning news outlet, a surprising number of liberals are contributing to the network’s success
If you’re a Republican and watch cable news after putting the kids to bed, you’re probably watching Tucker Carlson on Fox. If you’re a Democrat watching cable news at the same time, you are possibly watching ... Tucker Carlson on Fox.
That’s a surprise twist in cable news ratings that many people didn’t see coming, especially at MSNBC, where Rachel Maddow is the marquee liberal voice and shares the same time slot as Carlson.
But Nielsen MRI Fusion found that “Tucker Carlson Tonight” was the top show in that time slot in October among both Republicans and Democrats ages 25-54. As The Wrap reported, “Of those demo-aged viewers surveyed who identified as Democrats, 39% chose Fox News, 31% chose MSNBC and 30% chose CNN for programming from 8 p.m. ET to 11 p.m. ET.”
Moreover, in viewership throughout the day, 42% of Democrats ages 25-54 watched Fox, while 33% watched CNN and 25% watched MSNBC.
But the question remains: Why are Democrats tuning into Fox, which is so frequently derided by those on the left? And why do younger Democrats choose Carlson over Maddow?
It’s not enough to point to Carlson’s astoundingly good hair. Nor do the numbers suggest that just a handful of Democrats are hate-watching Fox for their work, like the staff of Media Matters for America and CNN’s Brian Stelter, who wrote the anti-Fox book “Hoax.”
But over 25 years, Fox built an extraordinarily successful brand and is unflaggingly loyal to it, and to the Americans whose values and beliefs are often ignored or outright disdained by other news organizations. It has been atop the cable news ratings for an unprecedented 20 years. As such, it’s too big to ignore, especially when it’s reporting on stories and issues that other networks don’t touch.
Politico senior media writer Jack Schafer wrote recently that a family member once told him, “I want to see how Fox is covering this.”
Ironically, Fox, long denounced by its critics for being too partisan, is decidedly neutral on one thing: the political preferences of the people who tune in. At the end of the ratings day, all that really matters is eyes.
So, maybe "some Democrats" are waking up to the fact that they aren't being told the truth or at least, the other side of a story like Hunter Biden for example where the MSM incredibly conspired to keep the Hunter laptop story out of the news till after the election.
Fox and Tucker just broke a story about the Los Angeles District Attorney's fuck up in handling a so called "trans person", when this thing is caught on a phone call making fun of "it's" light sentence. The DA said "If I had only heard that jail house recording sooner".
And Fox News broke that story, you know, the people accused of not reporting news.

More disturbing Hannah Tubbs jailhouse calls surface in email showing Gascon's office aware weeks ago
Gascon denied knowing about Hannah Tubbs' jailhouse recording until this week
Files obtained by Fox News Digital show Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascon’s office was aware of disturbing jailhouse recordings of transgender child molester Hannah Tubbs gloating about a light sentence on Feb. 2. Gascon released a statement Sunday denying knowledge of the recordings until after Tubbs' sentencing.
"If we knew about her disregard for the harm she caused we would have handled this case differently," Gascon said on Sunday.
You should take a look at what these people are calling "her" which may not be it's preferred pronoun raising all kinds of "legal" issues.
