Woman denied "termination" died of septic shock

So much for all these people, who believe that abortion is not something people should do. It`s better to have someone die of septic shock when miscarrying. (cynical mode on), and no offence, but should Doctors not do "medicine" rather than " preach religion"? I mean the medical decision should have been obvious? A dying baby presents septic possibilities. So? I don`t understand how Doctors can refuse a life saving treatment based on such idiotic believes. I am sure the baby and the woman would have rather lived or died in less pain. If the heartbeat was still on, and the baby was to die anyway, then what?? Let them suffer like in a dessert in africa?? I wonder why have hospitals at all then??

"Two investigations are under way into the death of a woman who was 17 weeks pregnant, at University Hospital Galway last month.

Savita Halappanavar (31), a dentist, presented with back pain at the hospital on October 21st, was found to be miscarrying, and died of septicaemia a week later.

Her husband, Praveen Halappanavar (34), an engineer at Boston Scientific in Galway, says she asked several times over a three-day period that the pregnancy be terminated. He says that, having been told she was miscarrying, and after one day in severe pain, Ms Halappanavar asked for a medical termination.

This was refused, he says, because the foetal heartbeat was still present and they were told, “this is a Catholic country”.

She spent a further 2˝ days “in agony” until the foetal heartbeat stopped."

“The doctor told us the cervix was fully dilated, amniotic fluid was leaking and unfortunately the baby wouldn’t survive.” The doctor, he says, said it should be over in a few hours. There followed three days, he says, of the foetal heartbeat being checked several times a day.

“Savita was really in agony. She was very upset, but she accepted she was losing the baby. When the consultant came on the ward rounds on Monday morning Savita asked if they could not save the baby could they induce to end the pregnancy. The consultant said, ‘As long as there is a foetal heartbeat we can’t do anything’.

“Again on Tuesday morning, the ward rounds and the same discussion. The consultant said it was the law, that this is a Catholic country. Savita [a Hindu] said: ‘I am neither Irish nor Catholic’ but they said there was nothing they could do.

Here is a thread that actually addresses "real world" effects of holier-than-thou, one-size-fits-all-while-on-autopilot morality. The article was an excruciating read that has more in common with a Paddy Chayefsky play than what should be a rational reality.

Sad thing is that the Irish medical establishment and the "church" didn't let some "welfare sucking" "taker" from Malleable Mitt's famed 47% group die, but a dentist who was married to an engineer. So much for pissing on the "takers."

The most positive take away from this is, "Well, there are now two more beautiful voices in heaven..." or something like that. I'm sure the husband appreciates that loads.

I'm sure we have a lot of folks dying to say it was God's will. But you know, they'd only sound like arrogant, ignorant, toothless bastards. Which, in fact, most of them are. Even in IRELAND!

This is a tragedy that we cannot allow to continue on any level. And women's health must be a priority in USA and worldwide. We're trying. Unfortunately we're a country that's about 49% dipshit!

Stick your bibles up your asses folks! It's time to join the 21st Century!

I hope that is an isolated instance. It is truly tragic. I know of very few in this country who would force a woman to carry a child if her life was in danger. And those that do, don't get elected to office, thankfully. Consider Missouri and Indiana.

I am totally opposed to abortion. That is why I will never have one. If someone else wants or needs one, it's not my decision to make. It is theirs. Why these people want to control everyone's life is beyond me.
Bad medical treatment. Of course the woman s life should have been saved. Get a life everyone of you sad sacks.

Comparing apples to oranges guys. There are very few people in the US who would stop this abortion. So few that they are not really worth talking about. If you want to make this a some kind of cause celeb then I can put out about men who died from prostrate cancer waiting for treatment in Canada, a overweight man who could not get his broken ankle set because he would not get smoking in England, a famous skier who died because a nurse didn't think her injuries rated being seen by a doctor in Canada.

Maybe part of the socialized medical program of Ireland?

This article is not a condemnation of religious people in general and the Catholic Church in particular, it is one shining example of the evil and horrors that is socialized medicine....I laugh at the immoral and sinful Europeans who have collectively slashed their wrists in a warm bathtub and look down their noses at Americans.....the irony and hypocrisy are comical.......

Well, MarshCzar, one doesn't know what to say after reading your glorious example of tolerance and forgiveness jumping at us off of the page, ascending to unreachable heights of sanctity and shining as a beacon of enlightenment and honor from above. Yes, we are not truly worthy as those such as you. Grasping the true elegance and wonder of what you have written is a task best left to great and powerful, not us mere mortals.

YOU

It sounds more like a case of simple, plain, bad MALPRACTICE! But that's my opinion simply based on the contents of the posted article.

Nina, do you want the USA involved in this? I mean the libtards don't really care if a woman is covered head to toe in cloth and dies from a gunshot to her head because she questions Islamic authority of her country. So why should we care about what goes on in Ireland due to religious laws? Is it a religious law?
CuteOldGuy's Avatar
Wow! Excellent point, Gnad. We don't care if women in other countries get killed by drones or bombs or bullets, or get stoned to death for disagreeing with a man, but let one of them get denied a necessary abortion, and we go nuts.

Still, the doctor's decision was absolutely wrong.

I'm not a Republican. That is one of the reasons why. Geez, with all your money and influence you brag about all the time, you'd think you'd be able to pay attention.

I know you're not. But your comment that very few would want laws as extremely anti-choice as Ireland is way off base. That's the platform of one of the two major political parties, albeit one snt shared by a msjority of voters.

Abortion is illegal in Ireland except to save the life of the mother.

The problem is, somebody has to make the call as to whether or not the mother's life is in danger. It's pretty clear the wrong call was made in this case.
