Mata Hari was arrested on this date, February 13, 1917. She would be executed by firing squad for spying for the Germans on October 15, 1917.

Personally, Josephine Baker is my favorite iconic early 20th century entertainer turned spy.

Lets give some other spies credit;
Eddie Albert worked for the US Army in Mexico while working as an acrobat. He watched and photograghed German U-boats that were in port. Later he served in the US Navy reserve in combat as a small boat operator.

Marlene Dietrich was not exactly a spy but she worked tirelessly against the Third Reich by visiting the front lines more often than Eisenhower did. In 1947, she recieved the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her work with soldiers and later Jewish refugees.

Celebrities were made of tougher stuff in those days.
