Donald Trump is used to controlling his world like the boss he is. But as president, he’d answer to the people. And so far in the rollicking 2016 presidential contest, he’s showing little willingness to dial down his because-I-said-so style. (AP Photo/Charlie Neibergall, File)
Jorge Ramos is a hugely popular news anchor for Univision and his profile has only increased since 2015 when Donald Trump had him removed from a press conference for antagonist behavior. Since then, Ramos has spent a lot of his career criticizing and ridiculing the president. Like many other anti-Trump complainers, Ramos has also ridiculed Trump’s promise to make Mexico pay for the wall.
In a stunning admission of intellectual defeat, Ramos penned an op ed in The New York Times on Friday admitting that Trump’s promise had come true. Mexico is effectively paying for the wall by actually being the wall.
Mexico is now the wall. President Trump got his wish….Of course, Ramos’ real point is that the greatest country in the world should not have any rules or laws governing it’s borders and national security. That is because Ramos lives in a world in which he does not have to touch the unwashed masses or hear their day-to-day struggles. His ivory tower has floor to ceiling blackout curtains. His high-minded opinions make for good conversation on the cocktail party scene, but they do not match up with the reality of what the rest of Mexico and citizens in American border states experience when their own governments turn a blind eye to illegal immigration.
Mexico has effectively turned into an extension of Mr. Trump’s immigration police beyond American territory. And this is the case on multiple fronts: On the southern border with Guatemala, they prevent Central American migrants from coming into Mexico; on the northern one, they block those seeking entry to the United States from leaving. The decision of Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, also known as AMLO, to follow this approach is misguided. He should let migrants continue their journey north.
Under the Migrant Protection Protocols program, which the Trump administration introduced in January 2019, asylum seekers who attempt to enter the United States at the U.S.-Mexico border may be required to stay in Mexico while the authorities make a decision regarding their case. As of November 2019, over 56,000 people had been sent back to Mexico to wait for the outcome of their applications, according to Human Rights Watch.
Ramos went on to complain about Mexico not just simply allowing hundreds of thousands of foreigners to march through their nation in hordes on the way to the Promised Land. Forget about what America should and shouldn’t be allowed to do with her own borders, why would Mexico or any nation run their national security like that? Two people crossing a border without paperwork is an illegal crossing. Twenty thousand is an invasion. I don’t know that much about Mexican history but they don’t seem to take to kindly to invading forces.
To my knowledge Trump never said he thought Mexico would cut a check for the wall. He did say they would pay for the wall, and a billion jokes later even his harshest critics are admitting…
Promise made and promise kept.
