A new Democratic bill with dozens of House and Senate sponsors would exempt any "vulnerable person" from detention at the border. That status includes, but is not limited to, anyone who "identifies as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or intersex." It would also exempt those with serious mental illness from being detained. Notably, it only requires that someone "identify" as bisexual or other protected category to avoid detention.
