How did the Vets stay disease free for years?

Just wondering how all the hobbyists stayed clean after hundreds of encounters over the years. Besides the obvious condom,shower,etc. do u have a ritual u do?
One hobbyist said he used Betadine and mouthwash.

So what kept u safe all these years?
