Protests continued into Sunday night in Beijing, with demonstrators holding blank white pieces of paper

Protests against strict Covid measures in China have spilled into a second night and spread to the biggest cities.

Demonstrators gathered in the capital Beijing and the financial hub Shanghai.

Many held up blank pieces of paper to express their discontent and acknowledge the censorship. Some have, however, gone as far as calling for President Xi Jinping to step down.

Millions have been affected by nearly three years of mass testing, quarantines and snap lockdowns.

It is very unusual for people to publicly vent their anger at Communist Party leaders in China, where any direct government criticism can result in harsh penalties.

The police have largely allowed the rallies to continue, but in Shanghai officers arrested several people and cordoned off streets on Sunday.

Hundreds of people gathered on the banks of a river in the capital Beijing for several hours on Sunday, singing the national anthem and listening to speeches.

Earlier in Beijing's prestigious Tsinghua University, dozens held a peaceful protest and sung the national anthem, according to pictures and video posted on social media.
Protests also took place during the day in the south-western city of Chengdu and central cities of Xi'an and also Wuhan - where the Covid outbreak originated nearly three years ago.

Videos posted on social media appear to show hundreds of Wuhan residents taking to the streets, with some protesters pictured knocking down barricades and smashing metal gates.

The latest unrest follows a protest in the north-western city of Urumqi, where lockdown rules were blamed for hampering rescue efforts after a tower block fire in which 10 people died. China's authorities have denied those claims.

'Xi Jinping, step down'

In Shanghai - China's biggest city and a global financial hub - police kept a heavy presence in the area of Wulumuqi Road, where a candlelight vigil the day before turned into protests.

The BBC saw police officers, private security guards and plain-clothed police officers on the streets, confronting protesters who assembled for a second day.

But in the afternoon, hundreds had come back to the same area with blank sheets of paper to hold what appeared to be a silent protest, an eyewitness told the AFP news agency.

During Saturday night's protest in the city people were heard openly shouting slogans such as "Xi Jinping, step down" and "Communist party, step down".

Such demands are highly unusual in China.

But the government appears to have drastically underestimated growing discontent towards the zero-Covid approach, a policy inextricably linked to President Xi who recently pledged there would be no swerving from it.

One protester in Shanghai told the BBC that he felt "shocked and a bit excited" to see people out on the streets, calling it the first time he'd seen such large-scale dissent in China.

He said lockdowns made him feel "sad, angry and hopeless", and had left him unable to see his unwell mother, who was undergoing cancer treatment.

There has been a large security presence around Urumqi Road, where people attempted to lay floral tributes for fire victims in Urumqi

The zero-Covid strategy is the last policy of its kind among the world's major economies, and is partly due to China's relatively low vaccination levels and an effort to protect elderly people.

Snap lockdowns have caused anger across the country - and Covid restrictions more broadly have trigged recent violent protests from Zhengzhou to Guangzhou. In spite of the stringent measures, China's case numbers this week hit all-time records since the pandemic began.

Taking to the streets in numbers and calling for President Xi to step down was thought to be unthinkable not so long ago.

However, after a recent dramatic protest on a Beijing bridge that stunned many, a bar appears to have been set for the expression of more open and sharper dissent.

Others have also chosen to wave the Chinese flag and sing the national anthem - its lyrics espousing revolutionary ideals and urging the people to "rise up, rise up".

It is a show of patriotism that could also be read as a pointed expression of solidarity with fellow Chinese suffering under the zero-Covid policy - and a call to action.

The big question is……When Will Xi send in the tanks?

China's entire armed forces couldn't stop a full on nationwide mass riot. even with shoot to kill orders. the Army would turn on Xi. he'd be asking soldiers to shoot people that could be their family or friends.

hard to believe that a little cell phone is the cause of all this.
Pfizer and Moderna have both offered their shots but China is demanding the technology to make Mrna vaccines first. They are holding the world hostage because they are the global workshop. Bringing manufacturing back to the US is never going to happen. Unions take over companies and strangle them to death

Interesting article. Surprised to read about the low vaccination rate in China. I wrongly assumed that they would be pretty strict about that.

I'm looking to switch firms and had an interview last week and the lady asked me if I was fully vaccinated and boosted (I am). I've never been asked about anything medical related before so it kind of threw me off guard for a second because I was surprised by the question. She then asked me how I identified myself and I thought, "what the fuck is going on in corporate America to be asking all of this shit in a damn interview?" I guess the interview vetting questions have really changed since my last one 7 years ago. LOL

Anyway, again, interesting article and thanks for providing.

In a way this reminds me of the Freedom demonstrations in Tien amin Square during the Clinton years.

Hope it doesn't end the same way.

China’s top health officials have pledged to rectify Covid-19 control measures to reduce their impact on people’s lives, while deflecting blame for public frustration away from the policy itself, in their first press briefing since protests erupted against the government’s stringent zero-Covid policy over the weekend.

Lockdowns to suppress the spread of the virus should be lifted “as quickly as possible” following outbreaks, said health officials at a National Health Commission press briefing in Beijing on Tuesday, as they defended the country’s overall policy direction – which aims to stamp out the spread of the virus through hefty controls.

Xi figures that unloading on these protesters with huge canister rounds out of tanks will help these people accept the ChiComs way of doing things.

the only way to defuse this is to back off the draconian lockdowns which only prolong pandemics anyway. we'll see in about a week if Xi and the CCP try to stay the course and this escalates or if they back off.

my stock broker has a buddy who's a financial planner and broker for a big US firm and a few years ago he got invited to some conference in China as a rep for his firm and while out to dinner the night before he left with a group of Chinese finance people somehow protests came up and he casually mentioned "like Tiananmen Square..." and got mostly blank stares from the people. a few appeared to know what he meant but kept quiet. then one of the younger people asked "was there a protest at Tiananmen Square?" so he said "well yeah, here .. " and proceeded to bring up youtube videos on his iphone which had connectivity that was not blocked. these people were stunned. most never knew it even happened. obviously it's censored big time in China.

so he's leaving the next day and at the airport he gets followed by a couple Chinese guys in suits and at one point was convinced they were going to detain him. he managed to stay ahead of them and get past the gate to his flight, on a US based airline probably lucky for him. they followed him right up to the gate. he told my broker buddy he doesn't know if someone dropped a dime on him from that dinner or if somehow they knew what he accessed via his phone. scared the hell of of the dude. thought he was suddenly in some spy movie except it was real. the guy was never so glad to get back the US in his life.

Is there a crowd funding effort to buy boxes of printer paper for the protesters?

Heard this mornings news that the Government is pushing back.
And they are using cellphone records to identify placement of people at demonstration site. Also contacting them.
The report states that people who now walk out amongst these sites are definitely going to be stopped, identified, and questioned why there.

Just the start.

That Social Credit bit swings really hard.
