Advice for first trip to NL

Kinda bored with hobbying at home and am very much flirting with embarking on my first trip to NL. Any advice? Any other resources out there that may be updated more recently? It's calmed down and a little safer these days, right? I'm a fat white guy with only a little knowledge of Spanish, is this a terrible idea?
