Calling apps?

I have been using google voice and not happy with it.
What are some apps that I can use for texting and calling that do not require any payment?
I have looked already looked into burner, sideline number, and google hangouts.
Hope y'all have some suggestions.
Have a great week!
Thanks in advance
What do you hate about google voice?

textfree app is decent.

google gives police access to accounts and passwords.
This link even mentions it. In today's hobby climate I would rather be safe than sorry.

I tried textfree but after about 60 minutes of free talk time they require you to use a major credit card to purchase minutes.
Thanks y'all.
Hoping for other suggestions.
My read on those events are different than your read, but I respect you need to feel ok with your communication tools.

GV is the best out there! It uses your cell service to call into their forwarding system, I've had it for years and know the in and outs on how to use correctly, all other apps run on data only. No bueno

If you're strictly text only to set everything up like myself, you can use any app

Talkatone is pretty reliable.
But I don’t know about the paying, I don’t go over the free.

Wrong about Text Free. I use it for my hobby number, on an anonymous burner. I pay for minutes with cash at 7-11. Also, it gives you 1 free minute of call time for each advertisment you watch. If you search payment options on the app, you'll see a pay with cash option good at Walmart and 711.

I used Freedompop for a while. It's a buck for the sim card. You get 200minutes free and 500 texts. MMS is extra. Only downside is you have to use the app to send and receive calls and texts.

You can change # as often as you want, even phish the # you want to show up on the receiver caller ID.
