A Working Woman's World: Brief Survey Part 1

1) Do you see being a professional escort or alternative adult entertainer to be generally demeaning/harmful/degrading or empowering for women?

How can it be demeaning?

Empowering?

Are you ashamed/proud of your work, and would you like to be able to share with the world (family, relatives, friends, general public) tell them what you do...receive support, encouragement

2) How can it lead to certain psychological disorders - body dysmorphic disorder (obsession with appearance, plastic surgery) eating disorders, depression, severe personality changes, substance abuse...etc

(and also how can the above be prevented?)

or

How can it lead to raised levels of self-esteem, promote self confidence, provide healthy and creative outlet of expressing sexuality, etc

I suppose it really is all just based on your particular point of view.

I used to think that providing was something that some girls did for a short season in their lives purely for economic reasons.

However, I remember a very gorgeous blond provider confiding me in once after a session with a tinge of sadness that what she did was "degrading" which frankly, was shocking for me to hear.

. . . Personally, I saw nothing degrading in it, but I can understand how certain people can have that perspective although I thought it would tend to be more along the lines of religious conservatives, not providers themselves!

I am not ashamed of being a provider, but I don't see it as something I'd want to go tell the world. I'm a very private person, and always have been. What I do for my money is my business whether it's scrubbing toilets, cleaning houses, cooking, web design - doesn't matter.

I used to be a stock photographer and always felt like I was selling my soul doing it. I feel privileged to not be in a job where I sell my soul.

As far as your second question, I would think those things are more likely if someone doesn't enjoy their job. I am a big fan of clean living, I walk several miles a day and eat well. If anything, my job has made me feel BETTER about my body, not worse. My job is also motivation to stay in good shape and maintain my appearance. I get a lot of unsought positive reinforcement about my body from clients, which I appreciate as it keeps me motivated to stay looking good

I thinks gals who are truly excellent and highly skilled at being an escort and being able to arouse and satisfy clients would and should find the job very rewarding. The key is not to just do it but do it in an excellent way like any other job so you feel you are the best. That means looking the part, being physically fit and being good at erotic psychology as well as having super BCD skills etc etc. There is a lot to being the best at anything. Most providers dont put in that kind of effort unfortunately. I agree fully with Missy in her response.

That all being said this job is NOT for everyone. You have to be smart about it, and not become a victim of it. If you're feeling burned out it's important like any other job to take a break and re-assess yourself and regroup your mind, body and soul. Most important to me is having saved my money and invested it, so I have something to show for the years of work, and to always have a healthy positive attitude about it. It CAN definitely affect your civvie life if you're not careful. But I would never trade it in for anything. Being an escort has been truly rewarding for me in more than just finances...but in many other ways. I have met wonderful people, men and women, through my work.

I'm proud of it myself, and am an intensely private person, but I wouldn't mind doing public interviews, and would prefer to be open and honest with ppl if they care to know of all my hobbies, work.... to move the cause forward in a positive light...

I hate hiding stuff

I used to be a stock photographer and always felt like I was selling my soul doing it. I feel privileged to not be in a job where I sell my soul.

I know, I feel blessed everyday to be doing something I naturally love...and being paid for it Wow. Lucky lucky me

But you create your own luck

My sessions are often very therapeutic (for both ppl), I feel like I'm doing a better job of connecting with people, than I would be as a traditional psychologist.

Its about how much you save/invest, not about how much you make
I know some people who pray right before a session
Some of us pray that our performance improves or is at least adequate. Some of us pray we'll just get hard & pop.

I have always been grateful for what I'm about to receive!
Ok, since its not some bs paper for a grade here's my opinion.
It can be all of the things you listed. People react differently to everything. I have friends that are happy when they get drunk and I have friends that turn into complete assholes when they get drunk. We all share the same bottle of liquor but we all get different results. Its the same with everything else in life. Some ladies don't like being providers and they may be able to push their way through each session but it will eventually be too much and they will either quit or abuse drugs or become mentally twisted etc. I think for most its just a job and they have the mental or spiritual toughness to do it without all the crazy stuff that affects the ladies that shouldn't do this.

Neither...both. The most demeaning job I have ever had was waiting tables. It isn't about the job, it is about the person. When I was all dumb and out of control in my early 20s I would never have been able to do this. It would have been harmful, only because I wasn't centered within myself. And that is going to be different, of course, for everyone. I'm sure there are some working women with a much better handle on the business that are quite young. They just got their shit together sooner.

Are you ashamed/proud of your work, and would you like to be able to share with the world (family, relatives, friends, general public) tell them what you do...receive support, encouragement

It would be nice if it wasn't a big deal. I don't like lying to my parents but they would be really upset and hurt and scared for me. But I'm not on a crusade about it either.

2) How can it lead to certain psychological disorders - body dysmorphic disorder (obsession with appearance, plastic surgery) eating disorders, depression, severe personality changes, substance abuse...etc

Like anything can lead to those things. You prevent it the same way you prevent it when it comes from abuse or neglect or just sheer stupidity. Which is not at all.

How can it lead to raised levels of self-esteem, promote self confidence, provide healthy and creative outlet of expressing sexuality, etc

If you enjoy your job, any job, it makes all of that happen. IF work is important to you. I just don't see this industry as a demon or a savior. While I have frequently made the point that this job cannot be compared to a lawyer or a waitress in the customer service aspects of it, a work ethic is a work ethic is a work ethic. Some people will benefit from this industry and some people will not. I would make a terrible doctor and I would hate it mightily, that doesn't mean the medical profession is to blame when I lose it.
