Somewhere in recent years, the GOP’s engagement with modern America and how to best project those values into a nation of 320 million people became dysfunctional. As the country has diversified, the party has remained monochromatic, has grayed, and rather than allowing some birch-like give on shifting cultural norms, has become an unbending oak of ideological purity. The GOP now finds itself lacking an intimate’s ability to criticize productively, given its demographic and cultural divergence from the majority of the country.

Independents win or lose Presidential elections....they split their votes.

I think what the article is trying to emphasize is the end of the GOP republican party. A new type of republican party will probably form, like the new independent one. Also, a new independent democratic party is in the making, such as the many independent democrats who wanted Bernie Sanders. He is actually an independent. I didn't even realize that until recently. He identifies as a democratic socialist. Whereas, Gary Johnson identifies as a Libertarian, with more republican values. I don't think I am quite extreme as Sanders, but I do lean more toward that type of government than the Libertarian. I don't think capitalism is bad, just the form that we have today in our country. Capitalism under a strong democracy can still work. It's called a capitalist democracy.
