Not only should they register their domain in their own name. They should enable whois privacy so their personal information isn't shared if any trouble was to come up. There are also companies that can register these names for you .. but it can cost up to $30 per domain name.
Only one person in the world can have the name they all go through an international clearing house no matter who you register with.

Yes but a .com is easier to remember. However if the name is not avail the best option is a .net. A .org or a .us is hard to remember and .orgs are really for non profit organizations.
The downside of that though is that it is quite a bit more expensive, and you can’t keep your information private like you can with a .com, or a .net.
Yes you can keep your information private. Either enable whois or have a company register the name for you. I wouldn't recommend registering a domain name with a friend or just some webmaster because if there is a falling out.. that person can own your name.
