The TOP three things to do in New Orleans ...

ElisabethWhispers's Avatar
I'm only going to be in town for a couple of days while working. But, I wouldn't mind doing a few things while in town.

It's been about 18 years since I've been to New Orleans. I've had beignets (sp) at the Cafe du Monde. I've been to the French Quarter although I wouldn't mind going back.

I would like to know the suggestions of the top three things that someone HAS to do when they're in New Orleans (preferably non-drinking suggestions).

One of my clients told me that I needed to go eat at "Mothers" for good home cooking that is excellent.

But everyone is an excellent cook in Louisiana! I have this theory about Louisiana, if you're not a good cook (male or female) they must make you move out of state. I've never met a bad cook there.

Is there such a thing as a bad restaurant in New Orleans?

At any rate, I'm asking about any three activities. Museums, site seeing, anything that you might wish to suggest.

Thanks, in advance, for the suggestions!

Always,
Elisabeth

*Ignoring food events.

1. Mardi Gras: you've got three weeks worth of parades from the raunchy Krewe de Vieux, to family friendly Endymion, to exotics like the Zulu & Muses parades. Fun for everybody.
2. Other Festivals: Take your pick - http://www.neworleansonline.com/newo...festivals.html
--From Essence & Voodo Music Festivals, Red Dress Run, Mid-Summer Mardi-Gras, White Linen Night (open house night for the art galleries & you're in dressed in genteel white), New Orleans Running of the Bulls, etc.

3. Other stuff:
New Orleans Saints Games. 'Nuff said.

Museums (http://www.neworleansonline.com/newo.../arts/museums/ ):
-National World War II Museum (it's a good half day trip if you read the exhibits, & it's only ~60% of the way built with 2 more structures being built. And the 4-D movie is amazing).

Running Events: Crescent City Classic: 4 races/year ranging from 5k-10k, running through New Orleans City Park, across the Bridges, etc.
http://www.ccc10k.com/
-Other Runs: Rock n Roll Marathon, Zombie Run, Color Runs, & Running of the Santas, Running of the Bulls, etc.

Haunted Houses:
-French quarter ghost tours: http://www.frenchquarterphantoms.com/
-Haunted Mansions: http://www.hauntedneworleanstours.co...orleanshouses/
-Halloween Horror Shows & Haunted Houses:
---The Mortuary - http://www.themortuary.net/
---House of Shock - http://www.houseofshock.com/

Race Track: New Orleans Motor Sports Park. From Go-Karts, to car-shows, to races, to driving instruction, & Open-Track Days

Various Car expos & Monster Truck shows at the stadium
Just tossing in that if you are a movie fan, you should check out Oak Alley. It a plantation museum on the Westbank. If you have ever seen a period piece about the US and there is a plantation house with oak trees lining the gravel drive to the front of the house, this is the site it was filmed.

Have fun. New Orleans is a great city.

Mother's is one of those places that has been around for years, but they lost quality and live off the reputation. In other words, it's ok, but I wouldn't stand in line to eat there. I am not sure what the site is, but google 100 free things to do in New Orleans. It is pretty informative.

try YELP

Heidi--great answer!
No better way to start an argument than to ask a New Orleanian where to eat...

Avoid Mother's. Twenty years ago they were a good blue collar restaurant with good poboys. Now it's an over-priced tourist trap. You can get a good, inexpensive poboy anywhere – just ask, but my favorite is Parkway Bakery. (No, it's not a bakery)

Upscale – Sylvain's in the Quarter.

Where the locals go – I'd suggest Mandina's in Mid-City. Over 100 years old and currently run by the 4th generation of the Mandina family. Good creole-Italian food.

If it's not too hot, stroll around the French Quarter, during the day, ANYWHERE off Bourbon Street. Great shops and great architecture in the residential section. The further from Canal Street the better.

Double-check this, but I think the Ogden Museum of Southern Art currently has some photos of Eudora Welty.
