just pick up a newspaper. there are 100's of music venues here. Wayyyy to many to get good advice due to tastes.
Best thing to do is pick up a free copy of the local tabloid, "The Austin Chronicle."

It will have all the venues and whose performing. It's the only all-in-one source.

Austin is crowded with boring garage bands and wannabes so you have to choose carefully.

On any week there will usually be only one act with any real accomplishment or merit. Last Saturday Jimmy Webb performed at the University at a sixty-seat tiny room called the Cactus Cafe, which is part of the University Union on campus. This is my favorite venue in the city because it is very small and nationally-renown artists like Jimmy Webb love it because it's tiny and they can chat a lot and be very close to the audience. Only in New York have I found a venue like that. Tonight and tomorrow Kat Edmundson will be there. She's a local jazz vocalist heading to the top. Austin has a group of local favorites that play a lot here but never seem to break out, such as Eliza Gilkison, Jimmy Vaughn, Niko Case - a lot of local enthusiasm but not enough mert IMHO for anything but local following.
not actualy bein IN austin makes it hard for me to just pick up anything. i have looked at the austin360 site, but does not seem to have much of the 'underground' listings.
Headhunters, Red Eyed Fly, Dirty Dog, The Parish are some of the venues i,ve been to. It depends on what type of music you want to listen to. Most 6th street clubs play nothing but that stupid hiphop techno shit to appeal to the narrow minded college kid scene.

DITTO.

Austin can provide the most wonderful musical experience or the most hellish depending on how you choose.
