Metairie / Kenner area, way safer for sure.

Metairie seems to be the best area for people to get to you from NS and other areas, so I'd go with that. I can say there's one hotel that requires a key card for the elevator, believe it's the Hampton or Marriott, maybe both, that I would avoid.
Too much BS to go through. I know there are also some seedy ones to avoid as well, but you'll know when you see them.
I use hotels.com to book because you can see all the areas and reviews, as well as finding out if they have key cards. You get a night free after 10 stays.
