Teddy got the first part right. I think American should just be American with no hyphens. I think you can be proud of your history but also be proud of what you are, which is an American. Irish, Latin, Italian, Muslim, African, Cuban or otherwise, still American. Those hyphens only serve to allow others to classify people's worth by some bullshit measure.

I disagree however that language has anything to do with that. I think as an American, we should be known as The multilingual nation. Asian countries like Japan and thailand are more homogeneous than America ever was or will be. yet, it's quite normal for a person to speak multiple languages. In France, you're french. Yet Spanish, German, French, English, and Italian and others are all regularly spoken by the French.

Anything the French can do Americans should do better.

Multilingual countries that work do exist - Switzerland is an example.
