Ronald Reagan began his second term on January 21, 1985. The trends from his first term all reversed themselves, as consumption rose 10%, domestic production fell by 8%, and oil imports increased by 49%

That's because there was no incentive to invest in domestic production when oil companies only received peanuts for their product.
Price controls on natural gas prices were even stupider. They were removed in 1989, during the term of Reagan's anointed successor, George H. W. Bush. And the rest is history!
Thanks to Republican Leadership during the late 1980's and the ingenuity of our Oil and Gas Industry in the 2000's, we roughly import the same volume of oil and liquid petroleum products as we export. And natural gas production boomed! Gas replaced coal for power generation, and reduced air pollution and carbon emissions and saved peoples lives because the air we breathe is now cleaner. We're now the second largest exporter of natural gas in the world!
So thank you President Reagan for ending the Windfall Profits Tax! WTF should be kissing the ground you walk on, because the source of much of his wealth, Enterprise, would be a shadow of its current self if the WPT had been extended.
And thank you too President George H. W. Bush! Not only did you create the base to make the USA a natural gas powerhouse, but you're the only Republican who WTF admires!
