Ok..no baseball or beer. What else is there?

It's my first trip, in any capacity, to STL. Baseball is second to bowling on my boring meter and I don't drink Budweiser...so what else?

If you have time during the day and the heat isn't too oppressive, I'd recommend a trip to the Missouri Botanical Garden:

or the St. Louis Zoo

both world class institutions.

I'll leave some of the locals (alas, I've been in exile here in Memphis over 10 years now) to provide you some local intel re: eating, partying, etc.

Have fun in St. Louis, or as I will always think of it, "Paradise on the Mississippi."

The science center is world class too.

Have fun whatever you wind up doing.

My only "problem" with Memphis was that it was on the wrong damn side of the river. Seriously... it wasn't until I moved here that I realized that I'd instinctively defined "east" as "towards the Mississippi" and "west" as "away from the Mississippi". For my first two years or so here I kept swapping "east" and "west" when giving or receiving directions (always half consciously orienting myself to the river), which certainly made things fun when I was driving. I suppose that if i moved back to St. Louis I'd have to take another couple years to readjust my mental map again.

Let's not forget the St. Louis Arch. Great museums and some of the best Italian food in the country on "The Hill". And yes I am a foodie.

BCG - you nut. If STL is "Paradise" I wondered what MEM is? Hell? Don't you know anything south of The Gulf of Mexico, east of The Atlantic, north of the ol' Mason-Dixon and west of the Mississippi is just...meh..to a southern gal?

The zoo (it's free) if you like that type of thing.
Also the Science Center and Art Museum (also free for the most part)

That's why they're free.

So you may as well go visit them; you've already paid for it (or will, anyway, when you settle up your hotel bill).

babee,

The paddle boating is in Forest Park on a man made lake. If memory serves me correctly the lake was made for the 1904 Worlds Fair. I wouldn't get that close to the MS here either. Way too dirty. As far as volunteering.....that would be interesting. You, me, picnic basket filled with wine/champagne, strawberries/cheese, a blanket, outdoors. Mmmmmmmmmm
