The press isn't defending Assange. They defended the trans-whatever when she/he leaked US military footage to Wikileaks. They defended Assange when he published other video and documents showing corruption at high govt and corporate level.
Why aren't they defending him now? First Amendment! Pentagon Papers! They didn't defend him whenever it was shown CNN colluding with the DNC to feed Hillary questions! The audacity.
Assange helped Trump (supposedly). Nevermind Hillary lost 23 iphones, laptops and blackberrys. Nevermind, Hillary had her email server hacked by the Russians and Chinese. Nevermind Hillary ordered her server wiped despite a preservation subpoena.

BTW, those rape charges against Assange are fake. One of the women he supposedly raped was a spy sent to gain his confidence.
