Woman says she was raped during massage at Shawnee salon

SHAWNEE, Kan. — A man working at a massage salon is out on bond, charged with the rape and sodomy of a customer in August.
Johnson County prosecutors say Freddie Perez-Cartagena forced sex on a 29-year-old woman after her massage at Massage Serenity in Shawnee.
According to an employee of the spa, Perez-Cartagena was not a regular employee, but a friend of the owner. She said on Aug. 13, the day the sexual assault allegedly happened, Perez-Cartagena allowed her to go home early for a medical issue.
“Freddie was here to watch the front desk as he did regularly to relieve the owner,” said Rachel Pike, an employee.
Pike said she does not think Perez-Cartagena was a licensed massage therapist at the time, although he had been in the past.
Two days later, Pike said the woman, who was a new client of the salon, went to police about a sexual assault.
“I am surprised that this situation happened as it did,” she said.
Pike said Perez-Cartagena told her things took a turn from professional during the massage because he and the woman were attracted to each other.
“Then it got a little bit heated up afterwards because they had an attraction to each other and that it was completely consensual and that he thought nothing of it other than it wasn’t the right thing to do because it was at his business,” Pike said.
Pike said she hadn’t thought much about it until prosecutors charged him on Tuesday, Nov. 4, and she isn’t sure what to believe.
“I believe his story, but at the same time it’s hard to not believe somebody who went to those lengths to accuse him.”
