I am considering a visit to the Austin area sometime. If I can make it work, it would be my first time there.

Could anyone recommend what area I should stay in? Best culture experience? Best food and shopping?

Many different areas in Austin to choose from depending on your taste and budget. Suggest you look at Trip Advisor to get opinions which match your personal preferences. Austin is more expensive that San Antonio, IMO.
