In Jackson for memorial weekend, what to do and where to stay?

First time here , came to visit some family . Actually kinda nervous

Welcome to Jacktown. That's a long ways from Nebraska. I'd recommend somewhere in the suburbs (Ridgeland, Pearl, Flowood), just don't stay in the city of Jackson and you'll be good.
