I'm considering visiting the Austin area in March. What I'm searching for is a good side of town to stay on and what are the best hotels there.

Agree, that the Arboretum area is the best. Most traveling providers stay in that area. Arboretum area is 183/Mopac (Loop1)/Great Hills Trail area.
