Clarification for someone new to the hobby

Is there a rough guide for how much ‘$’ as a symbol translates into in dollars? Like if someone tipped a provider $$, or an hour encounter was $$$? Certainly more means more, but curious if there is some general rule so I can have a better understanding for booking appointments and come to the table prepared.
