Just Curious - How is This Possible?

I looked at the stats on my site today and looked at the referrers. Again, it said I have referrals from sites that really have nothing to do with the escort business - one was a car insurance site!

How is this possible? It's happened quite a few times.

A lot of spammers will fake site referrals using bots for things like insurance to get you to visit their sites.

Wow, that's interesting - seems like a lot of effort to go to for an unlikely sale, but then if it's just machines working this then I see the point.

Basically there is a program that lets you send false referrers to loads of sites at once in the hope that the owner will check out your link. It also counts as a backlink in google if you don't password protect your stats.

This is a way they boost their traffic stats in search engines without getting any real traffic, as backlinks count for a lot with search engines. It does not really have any effect on your site unless you are having mass amounts of traffic so nothing to really worry about. Although you should be careful when clicking on some of those as they might be malicious. After all they are already trying to scam people into believing they are getting more traffic than they are by circumventing the system.
