I have never gotten to Fort Smith to see the historical area. Still want to! I know someone who had a house in the old residential area. There was a house on the next block that had belonged to one of the famous Madames. It had been converted to apartments and allowed to deteriorate, so not sure if it is still standing or not.

Fort Smith used to be famous for brothels, and now it is hard to find any ladies there. Around 1980 I met a man who had grown up in Fort Smith. He was middle aged at the time and told about lots of escorts working there when he was a younger man. The way he talked, they were quite a popular attraction.
I once attended a conference there, and I was astounded at how dead the town seemed. And then I wondered why the hell they put the conference on there. Maybe it was a lot cheaper than doing it in Springdale/Bentonville/Fayetteville.
