Help with Eccie issue

For the last few weeks, when I log on to Eccie and I have a new PM, as the site comes up, the little box pops up (the one that says you have a new PM), and it locks up my computer. I can't check "view it now", "cancel" or anything. It won't let me close the window, or the site. Computer is totally locked up.

I don't have to tell you how dangerous this could be. You can't close the window, the current page or ANYTHING. It is locked up. After a few minutes, which I don't always have, it will finally let me handle the PM the way it should.

Any thoughts, guys and gals. Thanks in advance. (Oh, I use Firefox and my OS is Vista Business)

Which version of Firefox are you using? If it is Version 4 you may want to go back to Version 3.5. Right now I am using Version 3.5.16 on an XP system and have virtually no issues. Version 4 being brand new and all should be avoided for now.

Uninstall Firefox and then re-install it. Pay very close to the plug-in settings. Are you using "private browsing" in firefox, then try it without "privacy"? if so try to repeat your problem with eccie. If one works, then the other has setting issues you should be able to adjust. Probably starting with the Pop-up setting.

Or try in IE with privacy on and off, some procedure, if it works in one and not the other, you have settings to adjust.

Also, get rid of Vista (lovingly referred to as "Blista for Bloatware Vista") if you can. Even if it means going back to XP, although the support for XP is running out. Windows 7 seems to be working fine and if you can afford the upgrade go for it.

Microsoft forums are talking about problems with Silverlight, even if you do not use IE for your browser, it may have downloaded and causing some conflicts.

Stay aware from Chrome, Google is the largest data-mining giant on the planet and plans on keeping it that way. That is their business plan for revenue generating. Be afraid, be very afraid!!

Happy hunting, ain't technology great!

Thanks for your help.

And, no I don't use "In- Private" for browsing.

If you want to stay with older firefox, do a search for the version you want. You might include the word "legacy" in a search.

And why aren't you using "In-private" browsing? It's default is that it does not save any browsing history or cookies, etc. Everyone in the hobby should be using "In-Private" browsing. And still manually deleting your browser history regularly.

I will send you a PM to help test your end.

Okay guys, I have successfully un-installed and re-installed Firefox Version 3.6. My problem has gone away. I received 3 PMs yesterday and it worked flawlessly!

Unfortunately, I did not take note of all the settings before I un-installed the browser. But after re-installing, it all works well now.

jframe, you mentioned getting rid of Vista. It would be my PLEASURE!!! This crap has been a pain in my aXZ since I bought this computer 3 years ago this month. What a piece a garbage. I'll not spend the money to upgrade to 7, however, as I am thinking about buying a new laptop.

Thanks again for all the help. I wish I had some way of knowing what had happened to cause all this so that we would have a "fix" it it ever surfaced again.

You may download the latest Firefox Version 3.6 from here...

http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html

One correction to my earlier post...

The Firefox version I am using is 3.6.16, not 3.5.16.

I'm using FF 4.0.1 with W7 and have had no problem at all dealing with the pop up box when I receive PMs.

Sounds like you got the boat to float. Glad to hear it.

As to getting rid of vista, without having to buy a new computer, check around with your local computer tech shops. they may have a licensed version of XP that they will sell and install. Keep in mind that support for XP ends this summer I think. Might cost you a $100.00 bucks or so. And when you get a new computer, with W7, you will still have a fallback that is functional.

Technology and good coffee in the morning is the life for me!!

Thanks again. I may very well take your advice. This freaking Vista ought to have a bounty on it like bin Laudin did. It needs to be shot in the head too!!! What a pain it has been.
For extra safety you can go to setting on your ECCIE user CP disable the notification pop up and just check for new PM's manually

Changing Operating systems is a good time to buy a new computer, that is for sure.
