The USA does not need a single payer system. With the combination of Employer group health insurance and the Individual market (ACA changes), the percentage insured is 91.2. Which is close to what the CBO projected at the end of 2017. Just about everyone has some type of health insurance. The percentage would be higher but only 31 states took the Expanded Medicaid. To get closer to 100% all the states would need to do the Expanded Medicaid. See Table 4.

Note: numbers in Table 4 are for citizens a under age 65. Once you turn 65 you will go to Medicare a government run system for seniors.
