A question about Mardi Gras refreshments

Might have been around a while, but it was new to me. Probably not of general interest, so if you want to just pm, that's fine. Anyway - saw a bunch of folks sucking/squirting a red substance from large (maybe 50 cc) syringes. Didn't find out what it was, whether a new form of jello shots or what. Anyway, hoping one of you locals can tell me what I missed when I was there.
