The name of the military post didn't matter that much

The most important relationship was with the unit you were in. That's where your roots were. Not the place you were at.


Every military unit in existence today has only been associated with the United States. Units move from post to post on a regular basis depending on the needs of the service.
Having a military base named after a person should be reserved for men who kept the faith with the United States.
I think that's reasonable. I also think if it were possible to ask the namesakes themselves that they would not argue the point.
There is a possible notable exception I'm aware of (I don't know when all the bases were named, just the ones I was stationed at). Ft. Bragg was named before the civil war started.
It's much easier to figure out what to do with a few instead of a bunch.

If you had been in the military you would know that.
Your loyalty would be more to the 82nd Airborne or 18th Airborne Corp, etc.

Looks like you would stay at "Tara" after your family (unit) moved on to South Carolina or some such to stay in the fight. "Tara" may have been burned but Gen. Sherman is still around there somewhere.
The main group of complaints comes from non-military or people who want monuments to people who fought against the Union..

I was stationed at Ft. Lee Virginia for most of my army service.

I couldn't care less if they renamed the post, although I would prefer it if they kept the name.

It is the unit, not the base.
My team left mugs behind at perhaps a dozen NCOs and a few OCs.

I agree, its the unit, not the name. Ft. Bragg is in NC not CA. I had several Uncles in 82nd Airborne and a Cousin1 173rd Airborne.
