Interesting Piece of American History

Aaron Burr, the US vice president who shot dead Alexander Hamilton in a duel, had a son of color buried in an unmarked grave near Philadelphia.

Burr's descendants said they are convinced he fathered abolitionist John Pierre Burr with Mary Emmons, a nonwhite servant who was from Calcutta, India.

The couple also are believed to have had an older daughter, Louisa Charlotte.

On Saturday, descendants of both father and son laid a black marble gravestone at Eden Cemetery in Collingdale, Pennsylvania, just outside Philadelphia, where the younger Burr is buried, reports the Daily Times.

He was relocated there after his death in 1864 from Olive Cemetery, a historic African American cemetery.

While he wasn't black, the younger Burr, half Indian and half White, was a well-known member of Philadelphia's African American community.

He had been a barber and abolitionist, who helped slaves escape to freedom on the underground railroad. He also was rumored to have been the son of the vice president's for years.

When I read this article, I was surprised that there were any East Indians at all in the USA all those centuries ago. However, considering that Indian civilization was considered ancient even before the USA was founded, it doesn't surprise me that there were East Indians living in the USA way back then. After all, pretty much everyone else in the world found themselves in the Americas.

How fascinating that American Vice President Aaron Burr had illicit mixed race children with his female servant from Calcutta, India. Even more fascinating that one of his mixed race children grew up to be John Pierre Burr, a well known abolitionist who dedicated his life to freeing slaves. Although John was buried in an unmarked grave and not acknowledged by his own father, I'm glad he's receiving some recognition now.
Well written post: the Broadway hit Hamilton is also an interesting look at one of the founding fathers. Also interesting that by sheer numbers many of the people today named Washington, and Jefferson are black. This can be traced to when slaves were Freeman’s chose found father names as their new name.
