Possible visit next week-need advice!

Hello, I am going to try and make it up to your lovely city next week, and was just wondering what areas are good to "set up shop" in. What areas should be avoided, hotel recomendations, etc. I'm VERY unfamiliar with Houston so all pointers are welcome =)
