Best area to stay in Austin?

I am visiting Austin this next week and I was wondering what area is best to stay in? I have only been there one time 3 years ago and someone told me the south is not good. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
We get several of these requests each week as new ladies cycle through ATX. South is good for the guys who are down there, plus the folks from San Marcos who like to play in ATX. North to include the Domain and Arboretum areas which are also a favorite of many traveling ladies. Not much happening near the ABIA and East Austin. Not many hotels in West Austin.

You are also coming during SXSW weeks, so inexpensive hotels will be few and far between. You may find the Red Roof and Motel Six going for as much as twice or three times their normal rates--make your reservations and confirm rates well before arriving. The further you stay from DT ATX, the more economical it will be during the next 14 days. ABIA will be flooded with SXSW participants--flights will be fuller than normal.

Suggest that you do a search on this forum and you will find plenty of general information to answer any questions you might have about ATX hotels, bars, clubs and restaurants.

You should also read the sticky at the top of this forum which includes maps and cautions about NOT playing in WilCo as LE is much more active up there in all respects (Republican, Law and Order focus on the Hobby, DWI, Drug Busts and Traffic Stops), when compared to Travis County (Democratic Blue County and University) and inside the Austin City Limits.

Enjoy your trip.

Welcome to Texas, and, just suggesting that if you want to swap weeks to minimize the Austin scene, we'd love to have you visit San Antonio, too.
