Visiting San Francisco!

I will be visiting San Francisco soon! I'm hoping to have a lot fun & some relaxation!


If anyone is familiar with the city, please feel free to share some ideas and points of interest!

Alcatraz, Napa/Sonoma for wine tasting

I hope you have a wonderful trip. San Francisco is one of America's truly unique cities. There are some spots that you might keep in mind while you are there.

Buena Vista - home of Irish Coffee (even if you don't care for it, this is the place to have one!); located at the end of the Powell Street cablecar across from the Bay; ride the cablecar there

Lombard Street - the curviest street in USA (matches your curves); especially nice if you are not driving.

Marin County - just across the Golden Gate Bridge from SF; great shops, cafes, and a wonderful view of the city across the Bay

Fisherman's Wharf - always an active place; great seal watching, people watching, and chilling

So much more . . . You will have a great time.

Down the coast....Monterey Peninsula, Carmel and the Hearst Castle, San Simeon.

Sounds cheesy, but yes Alcatraz is a must! Also, bring comfy shoes (again), those hills are steeper than they appear

Eat, eat, eat! You will be in the center of some of the finest food ( and wine) in the US!

Alcatraz at night is the best time, IMHO. I got more of a feeling what it must of been like to be stuck in there, will be a tad cold at night though. enjoy trip

Golden Gate Park -- very nice, large park. Not quite Central Park, but still an amazing urban retreat.

An underrated art town. San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is nice. Exploratorium is very interesting. The De Young is underrated. Very interesting architecturally.

Head up to Sonoma for some wine tasting.

The Farmer's Market at the Ferry Building on Saturday is always interesting.

Many, many good restaurants.

If you plan a trip to the wine country, make reservations for the tours at the winery's in advance......Mondavi is a good " teaching " tour.....Beringer is a good tour and tasting....haven't been yet but Cakebread looks good........all are interesting.....Sonoma is just as good for tours as Napa....also recommended is Parduci and Sebastiani.

Twin Peaks speaks for itself...not far from the airport.

As the web site says.....the view at McCormick's is great.

Pier 39......." Chocolate Heaven "....please dip me in chocolate and call me a lesbian! If you like sour dough bread....a quick lunch is the SF clam chowder in a sour dough bowl at the pier.

Carmel......stay over night.....perhaps a B & B....or La Playa ( a great history to this renovated mansion )......beautiful old place.....pixies dance in the courtyard at night!

If you like stand up.....try a comedy club.....some of best anywhere.

I could spend the day hanging out at the Safeway at the Marina...unbelievable wine selections..great specialty eats...yummy

There's loads more......and I second The Buena Vista...late night..caffine surge and keeps you awake for other fun stuff!

Almost forgot.....sea gulls and ground squirrels will take bread from your hands near the beach and rocky areas at Pebble Beach on the 17 mile drive..but don't feed the critters, they'll litterly jump in your lap.

SF is many people's favorite city..mine included.

Charlie Brown has given some great advice. McCormick's is an awesome place to eat. There's a small dance bar with live music that you can walk to from there called 'The Dirty Martini'. Fun place to chill and it has some cool t-shirts you can buy.

Take some warm clothes for the evening and early morning. It will most likely be pretty cool.

Dotty's True Blue Cafe is the best for breakfast, but the Buena Vista Cafe, as SASpurfan and CB mentioned, is right on the bay and has a very cool vibe (order a few of their Irish Coffees).

Ride the cable cars from Market Street to the Wharf.

Great city. Enjoy.

Rent a car and go either north or south on highway 1.
Consider a bus tour of the wine country. You can do plenty of drinking and buying and leave the driving to someone who is sober.
