I am unsure whether to add an avatar or not. Are there any instructions on how to add the avatar to my profile?

Sure here is how you do it.
-On the left hand side under "Main Menu" click "User CP"
-On the left hand side under "Settings & Options" click "Edit Avatar"
-Either select from the default list or scroll down to "Custom Avatar", click the radio button "Use Custom Avatar" and either upload one you want to use or enter the URL where the image is stored on the internet
