Ignore the raccoon.
His preferences are based upon his dumpster diving behind restaurants.

That said, consider:
Whistlers
Seven Grand
WTF Icehouse

If you enjoy craft cocktails, I'd suggest a speakeasy called Garage. Interesting space, intimate atmosphere, and genuinely good cocktails. You can make reservations online as well.
Austin is good for veggie options AND barbeque, burgers, steak. What are you looking for and what part of town are you in? That said, I like Homeslice Pizza on Northloop. (If you don't like pizza at least a little, there's something wrong with you.) If you want to walk around Mueller park, there are a lot of choices including food trucks at the Hangar, but lots of stuff on or just off Aldrich. Lots of choices and a nice place to hang! Free parking most of the time across from the Thinkery. Hardest time to park is Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Otherwise worst case is a short wait. Great place to park in the week!!
Uchi is a must if you're a sushi lover. Their innovative dishes are incredible, and the ambiance is perfect for a special night out. Franklin Barbecue is legendary for its brisket—just be prepared for a bit of a wait, but it's totally worth it. For something more casual, try out Terry Black's BBQ for some authentic Texas barbecue without the massive lines.
