Film thread

I've been watching a ton of films lately to help me with a project I'm working on. Rather than keep starting threads about various films, I thought I'd start one thread. Last night I watched "The Lovely Bones."
I freely admit that I watched this because it's been nominated for somany awards. I'm typically more interested in charcater studies. I'm not a plot driven movie fan.
Anyway, what a DREADFUL film.
Where to begin? The editing was dire, the direction was all over the place, the characters were not developed and the transition from the middle world to the real world was...disjointed. Has anyone else seen this film? If so, why the hell is it up for several awards?

"OTOH, I have watched "An Education" which is based on a true story.
Pretty good but not award worthy material when compared with the likes of Gran Torino and the Hurt Locker. "Fish Tank" will probably appeal more to those who have spent a good deal of time in England and understand better the socio-economic relationships of the lower classes (because the importance of this film is reality).....

Has anyone seen "La Haine" (the hate) (1995)?
Is it worth a watch?

My ATF movie is new: Blind Side. Also based on a true story. Those who think Sandra Bullock is not a serious actress need to see this one. It is by far her best job.

I read that she had wanted to give dramatic acting a try when The Proposal came along, and decided to do it. Another romantic comedy...a chick flick. But Blind Side is really good IMHO.

Does anyone have a list of Courtesan movies they recommend, my two favorites are:

saw this movie at the local movie store...but didn't rent it so as not give away that i would know of such a thing...but if any movie would tell about this hobby...then i would think this would be it...

as for movies that i have enjoyed lately...i really enjoyed "inglourious basterds"...then again i like wwii period movies...i also really liked "the hurt locker"...normally i don't like modern day war movies...but this one was really good..

I absolutely LOVE that movie! I highly recommend checking out "Priceless"!

It really increased my lust for having professional male companions.

There are so many films that we could all recommend that I don't know where I'd start. I tend to watch for specific reasons, depending on what I need at the time. At the moment I'm chasing character studies and playing with structure issue or fresh takes on the biblical 3 act structure. With that in mind I'd recommend the following that may be lesser known:

White Girl
Nil by Mouth (very hard to watch)
Sexy Beast
Rise of the Footsolider
Monster
Hard Candy
American Psycho
Gone baby gone
Mystic River
Brick Lane
Stuart: A life backwards

Structure:

Anything directed by Chris Nolan. He has a gift for filming through the eyes of his character (i.e. disjointed if he's filming someone feeling disjointed)
Run Lola Run
Pulp Fiction
Crash

If you like period drama:

Bright Star
North and South (the UK BBC adaptation 2004)
Wuthering Heights (2009 with Hardy and Riley PURELY because Hardy nails the character of Heathcliff for the first time on screen)
An Education
Tess of the D's (with Jason Flemyng)
From Hell (with J. Depp)

I tend to look for those things, but from the perspective of acting and directing, not scripting. For instance, character studies makes me think of an actor or director, in this example Spencer Tracy, instead of a movie specifically. I'm inspired to watch Judgment at Nuremberg now, and his character in Inherit the Wind is just as satisfying.

Which Crash?
Sexy Beast is excellent.
For Bret Easton Ellis adaptations, Less Than Zero always stands out more for me. Downey and Spader are brilliant in their roles.

For structure the 2004 film

Ah yes "Less than Zero" loved that too...but I think Spader is a very versatile actor. You never know which way he is going to lean until he leans

Any see Ghajini? A India remake of Memento. I really liked it but then I saw it in a packed theater full of Bollywood lovers.
