Can A Republican Version Of The Squad Be Successful?

It looks like a group of freshman congresswomen might be the answer to the Democratic Party’s “squad.” After massive gains in the House, the Republican Party might have the perfect way to push back against the ultra-progressive faction of Congress.

Congresswoman-elect Maria Elvira Salazar (R-FL) has indicated that she is interested in forming a “freedom force” to stand up against the Democratic party’s squad, which includes Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Rashida Tlabi (D-MI), Ilhan Omar (D-MN), and Ayanna Pressley (D-MA).

“I was born in Miami — a community built by survivors my parents fled Castro’s socialist nightmare,” Salazar tweeted Friday. “[W]e can’t just let the socialist left destroy the American Dream for our children! join The Freedom Force & FIGHT BACK today!”

Her tweet linked to an article in which she made similar comments. She told NBC News: “I want to create a force within my freshman class that will have to be reckoned with. A force of reason, a force for freedom, a force for democracy.”

New York Republican congresswoman-elect Nicolle Malliotakis, expressed interest in the idea. Both Malliotakis and Salazar had parents who fled Cuba. “New York City needs a two-party system. We need someone who is going to be a counterbalance to AOC [Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y.]” Malliotakis told the New York Post.

Victoria Spartz, who won her election in Indiana, is also another potential squad candidate. Like the other two, Spartz understands what it’s like to live under socialism. “I grew up in a socialistic country, the Socialist Republic of Ukraine. I saw what happens when it runs out of money and it is not pretty,” she told Fox News.

Salazar has been an outspoken critic of the squad and their socialist policies. “When I hear this Democratic socialism that is being presented within the Democratic Party, I can only tell you that only brings misery, oppression and exile. And how do I know? Because I have lived it and I have covered it,” she reportedly said.

At least one member of the socialist squad has chimed in on the new Republican women entering Congress next year. Rep. Ilhan Omar said, “I mean it sounds ridiculous to me. I think they think they’re in high school. We’re in Congress.”

Omar’s pithy response might reveal a bit of fear on her part. While the establishment media won’t drool over a group of conservative women as they do the Marxist madams, it is clear that if such a group were to approach their positions in a certain way, they will undoubtedly shake things up in Congress.

It will nice to have members of Congress who are gung-ho about pushing back against the far-left progressive elements in the Democratic Party, but it could be great. If they can position themselves as an effective counterpoint against AOC’s squad, they could accomplish so much more than most would expect.

But it is important to note that none of this will matter if the “freedom force” focuses only on opposing what the squad is doing. One of the mistakes that we make on the right is allowing ourselves to be known more for what we’re against than what we are for. If the GOP’s newest additions to Congress really want to make a splash, they will be as vociferous as the squad in promoting conservative ideas instead of relying solely on telling the nation why the socialist crowd is wrong.

It won’t be enough to explain why the Green New Deal is foolish. They will need to provide a competing alternative that will solve the problems that the GND is supposedly intended to address. The key isn’t just slamming the horrific policies of the left, but to offer viable free-market alternatives that don’t grant the government more power.

The Freedom Force just might become the Democrats’ worst nightmare if they play their cards right. Hopefully, they are up for the fight.

Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.), a rising Republican star who launched a PAC to elect more GOP women after the last election, said after votes came in this week, “The story of the night is the success of Republican women at the ballot box … For all these naysayers, we have proven that strong, Republican women are the best candidates to put on the ballot.”

Here are the female Republicans who have won Congressional seats so far in 2020, making this the largest freshman class of women in GOP history:

Nancy Mace — SC-1



Mace, the first female graduate of the Citadel, won a tight race in South Carolina’s 1st district. Representative-elect Nancy Mace is a business owner and author of her book, “In the Company of Men: A Women at the Citadel.”

Maria Elvira Salazar — FL-27



Maria Elvira Salazar flipped a crucial House seat in South Florida, defeating incumbent Democrat Donna Shalala. Salazar was born and raised in Little Havana, Miami to Cuban immigrant parents fleeing Fidel Castro. A journalist, Maria has worked for CNN Español, Univision, and Telemundo throughout her career.

Yvette Herrell — NM-2



Yvette Herrell represents another district the GOP has managed to flip in 2020, defeating incumbent Democrat Xochitl Torres Small. An experienced legislator, Herrell served four terms in the New Mexico House.

Michelle Fischbach — MN-7



Fischbach enjoyed a decisive victory in Minnesota’s 7th district, blowing by incumbent Collin Peterson. Michelle served as Minnesota’s 49th Lieutenant Governor, and she was also the state’s first woman to serve as President of the Minnesota Senate.

Stephanie Bice — OK-5



Former Oklahoma State Senate Assistant Majority Leader Stephanie Bice flipped the very contentious 5th district back to the GOP in this year’s election, ousting incumbent Kendra Horn. During her time serving Oklahoma in government, Bice has earned a reputation as one of the most effective conservative leaders the state has to offer.

Ashley Hinson — IA-01



Iowa’s 1st district represents another Republican flip, with former journalist Ashley Hinson defeating incumbent Abby Finkenauer. A current Representative in the Iowa House, Hinson is now slated to take the next step and serve Iowans in Congress.

Lauren Boebert — CO-3



Gun-rights activist and businesswoman Lauren Boebert was victorious in her House race, fending off Democrat Diane Mitsch Bush. Boebert founded, owns, and runs her bar, Shooters Grill.

Marjorie Taylor Greene — GA-14



Businesswoman and mother Marjorie Taylor Greene is headed to Congress after winning nearly 75% of the vote in her district. Greene and her husband Perry purchased and now own Taylor Commercial, a commercial construction and renovation company that has managed a quarter of a billion dollars in projects.

Victoria Spartz — IN-05



Victoria Spartz, a Ukrainian immigrant, has defeated her opponent in Indiana’s 5th congressional district. Victoria was elected to the Indiana State Senate in 2017, where she earned a reputation as a limited government conservative. Spartz also currently owns and operates multiple companies, ranging from the industries of farming to real estate.

Diana Harshbarger — TN-01



Diana Harshbarger is now Representative-elect Harshbarger after defeating her opponent with nearly 75% of the 1st district’s vote. Harshbarger is a licensed pharmacist and successful businesswoman based in Kingsport, Tennessee.

Kat Cammack — FL-03



Kat Cammack is also heading to Congress after a victory in Florida’s 3rd district. Cammack is a small business owner, wife, and longtime Campaign Manager for Congressman Ted Yoho.

Lisa McClain — MI-10



Lisa McClain, a successful businesswoman, won Michigan’s 10th district with 57% of the vote. McClain is the Senior Vice President of HANTZ Group, a company with over $7.2B in assets.

Mary Miller — IL-15



Mary Miller is a wife, mother, local farmer, and business manager. She claimed a decisive victory in Illinois’ 15th district with over 70% of the vote. In her spare time, Miller teaches Sunday school at the local church.
