Question about Google Voice

A few months ago I set up a Google Voice account. My question is if a bit of time goes by and I receive a text from someone that had previously sent me a text GV makes another entry and does not simply add the new incoming text to the previous text that is already in my text log.

I have looked in the settings on my phone app and don't see anything that might help.

Anyone else having this issue or can someone help?
