Legal Advice Needed

I have been on SA for a while. I talked to a woman in September and have been off an on since that time. We have slowly stopped talking to one another. She had a friend posing to be an intersted party on the website. So I was talking to this new woman on the site...I started to have a weird feeling about her online and told her I wasn't intersted.

That is when the new girl informed me she was the other girls friend. She took screenshots of my online pics she also took pic of our convo. She told me I was going to pay for what I did...she demanded 6,000 by the end of the week or she would email my job and my wife...then she comes back and demands 8,000 or else....

The other friend lives in Oregon and I live in Texas not sure how to handle the situation.

What information does the blackmailer have that could hurt you?
She took pics off the site nothing bad just images...however she did start digging and knows my place of employment right now
She just wants money from somebody that is scared!! If that is you, then pay. Blackmail is tough business - Once she(?) plays her cards, she's got no leverage. Ignore her and oh yeah, be more careful...anybody that gets caught up in something stupid like this doesn't deserve to have money!!

Ed Highlight: It's probably not the most prudent thing to do to render advice based on the few facts posted here by the OP, especially since the issue is a very important one to him.

Use your internet resourcefulness to find an attorney nearby or within decent driving distance to meet, but outside your community, who indicates in their back ground they have internet (IT) experience/slander, etc., and even some criminal practice background. State Bar of Texas is the place to begin.

Oh .. until you have a heart-to-heart with a real lawyer ... I'd stay off the site or any others similar.

If he is dumb enough to ask (and dumb enough to get in the situation in the first place) then he is certainly dumb enough to take my advice - or advice from someone named Shyster.....

Well, you're right, at least where your bad advice is concerned. The OP's problem isn't an "Internet problem" and has nothing to do with slander. If the blackmailer called him on the phone, would you say the OP has a "phone problem"? The Internet was merely one means of conveyance of communications between the blackmailer and the victim. Also, the OP's problem doesn't sound in slander. Slander is oral communication of false information that could injure the target. Presumably, the blackmailer would convey the written conversations between the blackmailer and the OP to the OP's wife. That would have nothing whatsoever to do with oral communications or false information.

In reality, the OP's issue, under Texas law, is the blackmailer's attempted theft, because that is how the Texas Penal Code characterizes extortion/blackmail.

You advise the OP to contact the State Bar of Texas to try to find a lawyer who specializes in "Internet problems," slander, and who has some criminal background. Again, awful advice. I'd advise the OP to find a criminal lawyer recommended to him by a family member or trusted friend. It wouldn't matter if the lawyer was based in Plano. Attorneys have a duty of client confidentiality and could be disbarred for violating that duty.

I would venture to guess you're an IT geek which means, ipso facto, you consider yourself an amateur lawyer. You're not. You're an IT geek. If you forbear giving [bad] legal advice, I won't try to fix your eWhatever.

It's important because he could lose his job and his marriage could end should the blackmailer carry out her threats.

Really, do you want to tell you friend some bitch is blackmailing you, and so you need a lawyer?

Now, my advice would be fuck the bitch up, if I was a lawyer - after I told you how fucking stupid it is too put your business on a hooker board.

  1. Some people are fearless of risk, while other people are more risk-averse. Some people have more to lose than others. Some people's employer wouldn't care if an employee was on SA, but others would. Some men on SA are married, while others are single.
  2. Because of number one, one cookie-cutter description of an approach wouldn't be the best advice for everyone.
  3. Because of numbers one and two, my first post in this thread was to ask the OP what damaging information the girl may have. All the OP wrote was the girl had images. Rather than answering my question here, he wrote me privately. It turns out the blackmailer has other information that could hurt the OP.
  4. LexusLover's advice was to find a tech/defamation lawyer outside Plano. No offense, but I think that's stupid advice. The OP needed help from an attorney who specializes in criminal law. Better yet, the OP needed a criminal specialist who's handled situations like this. As I have written on this board many, many times before, and ASPD before that, a risk-averse person with something to lose or maybe a lot to lose should confer with an experienced, qualified criminal attorney to attempt to run off a blackmailer. A tech or defamation attorney isn't the right attorney for the job.
  5. After learning the relevant facts, and assessing the OP's approach to risk, I advised him -- privately and for free.
  6. How do I know my approach has a good chance to work? Because I've dealt with dozens, if not hundreds, of these situations before. Hell, I've dealt with seven blackmailers from SA since October 2015 alone. I doubt LexusLover (or you, for that matter) has ever been in the OP's shoes, nor has he (or you) ever given someone in the OP's shoes counsel and seen later whether the advice worked.
  7. You have no basis for your statement: "Really, do you want to tell you friend some bitch is blackmailing you, and so you need a lawyer?" Who's talking about anybody's "friend"? And it's obvious the OP wanted legal advice. How do I know this? HE POSTED IN THE LEGAL FORUM and he titled his post, "Legal Advice Needed."
  8. I also think advising the OP to hire a lawyer to "fuck the bitch up" is stupid advice. You don't put out a fire with gasoline, and no reputable lawyer goes around "fucking people up." A good lawyer will try to dissolve conflict, not worsen conflict. But if you know of a tech lawyer who specializes in "fucking bitches up," please let us all know.

Yes a real attorney is needed, and one that deals with issues related to hobby, and in this situation, the other aspects the OP mentioned. This is clearly a criminal matter, as Jon mentions. This is not speculative stuff, and there are numerous paths that the situation could go though, some nasty, and some of which have other unforeseen consequences.
And I did get out the popcorn for other aspects of your thoughts.

Just for laughs!

1. You could go out and buy some bitcoin.
2. You could load TOR and search around, Russian translation software, will come in handy.
2. You could go to some sites that sale trojans. One that will erase a HD, when executed.
3. You could email and send her the trojan.
4. Problem solved unless she has a backup.

Once again, just for laughs
