What is a person who knows they lied?

Can a person who chooses to post a lie as fact retain a shred of credibility? A shred of honor?
What would keep them from admitting the error and correcting it?

The internet allows people to try and project a persona of someone they would like to be, rising above many limitations.

But basic traits, or a lack of them, will always show through.
