83 Years: Academy Awards & PwC/Brian Cullinan Fiasco

Does anyone even care anymore about the Oscars. After all these years and as downhill and generic as it has indeed gotten? I mean, especially for the media to go this crazy about it?

Just wondering what the community's thoughts on this are....

I never was interested in watching the awards show itself. A few variety acts among repetitive “award” routines that are the same thing for every category (name the nominees, pause for dramatic effect, tell who won, hear a canned speech). It’s like any industry association banquet (best insurance salesman of the year, most creative breakfast cereal campaign, etc.)

It used to be interesting to hear (after the fact) who were the nominees and which won, as they were often films worth watching (or renting if they were no longer in theaters).

But in recent years, the “winners” are not well-made films or talented individuals, but those that align with the popular sentiment or the politics of the day. While a few are obviously thinly-veiled propaganda for some popular cause, even those that don’t have a clear political motive at least align with whatever world-view is in fashion.

Do like seeing the tribute to those that have passed. Thumbs up to Jennifer Anniston (sp) for mentioning Bill Paxton.

TMC also has the same thing.
