What is Fracking you ask? No you pervs it's not a new way to fuck!! Lol!
You may not have noticed but Exxon has mounted an aggressive campaign for natural gas and there are a lot of commercials on the idiot box trying to convince the public that natural gas is a great alternative to oil etc and it is. What they are not telling us is how they plan on extracting it.

Fracking is a process of hydraulically forcing chemicals, water and sand into the shale that is holding the natural gas. That process also produces radioactive wastewater and contaniments into the drinking water in the surrounding areas. Now it's apparent why Exxon is trying to brainwash us into supporting their extraction. Can you imagine what would happen to the Edwards aquifer as fragile as it is?

Yes I can imagine, or explain it in detail... its my field.

All I can say is that most people won't listen until they have to pay more for water than gasoline, have shitty water, or get sick. Trying to stand up to 'Big Oil' in Texas is a waste of time. Better to show them how much it will cost to clean it up. Oh, wait... they have a federal exemption from the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA 1974). Glad I'm moving.

Actually chemical and water fracking sounds reasonable.
In the early 60's UT and A&M (their Petroleum Engineering Departments are combined) studied the idea of nuclear fracking of old wells where small devices would be tested underground to frack a stratum. This would allow the defense department to continue testing and step around the test band treaty while providing a service to the oil industry.

Considering the history and recent incidents of safety violations, disregard of the environment, record making profits and the complete rejection of the moral and societal imperatives that come with the great wealth and power we as a country have given them, big oil has no credibility and cannot be trusted without absolute oversight by the EPA and all governmental agencies so tasked.

Haliburton Loophole should give you some indication, of what is at stake here, not surprising to see who backed this either.

I know that Halliburton is one of Cheney's monsters but besides big oil who else? I've almost forgotten about Halliburton and the fucked up thing is those assholes are still getting govt contracts.

I am undecided just yet as to the risk vs rewards of fraking. So if anyone here can put forth some empirical evidence either way all I am really reading is knee jerk reactions here. As far as I can tell from what little I have researched on my own there is no down side to this process and great amounts of energy are captured in the form of oil & natural gas with the added energy benefit of geothermal production as well.

Any effort searching Google would give you well documented information on fracking and it's effects supporting the numerous statements on this thread. Rakhir, Wiki "fracking" and scroll down to "health and environmental effects" and click on that button and they have a pretty good database of research against fracking.

I have personally been involved with hydraulic fracturing of tight gas reservoirs since the 1970's and of the hundreds of wells we stimulated, there has never been a hazardous leak or any environmental problem of any kind. It is safe and effective, though it requires a prudent operator to have properly set and cemented the well casing. Anyone who says differently has no idea of what they are talking about. Because of "fracing", there is an abundant supply of natural gas, at a reasonable price.

Someone else also made that statement and was referencing past technology also, is it possible that this is a different technology? What recent research do you have that supports what your saying because I believe that natural gas is a good option for the country but not the way "big oil" wants to retrieve it.
